I bought these because I wanted an easy and intuitive fire starter for the car emergency kits. I didn't want to leave matches or lighters in the cars. We live in the South and they get too hot in the summer months. My wife has never used a ferro rod and an emergency would be the wrong time to learn how. I tested one of the Fire Lite tinders with the included Fire Lite sparker and it worked fine, taking just a couple of strikes. Another tinder lit up in just a couple of tries with the ferro rod part of my cheap Harbor Freight magnesium fire starter. Those work, but aren't easy to use in my opinion, so I am confident in the tinder. My only concern was whether the tinder would spontaneously ignite in the heat of the car. SOL didn't answer my inquiries about this, so I had to devise my own test. I fluffed one up and put it on a piece of aluminum foil, preheated the kitchen oven to 250° F, and set it on the bottom shelf for half an hour. I understand that cars get up to 150° to 180° F. The tinder did not ignite in the oven at 250° after 30 minutes. I took it out, let it cool down, took it outside, and tried lighting it with the Fire Lite sparker. I had to hold the sparker a bit awkwardly, but the tinder lit up after five strikes (I kept bumping the tinder). Figure it will probably be okay in the cars. I wish SOL would make product safety info available though. Not sure what would happen if a neighbor's kid decided pop one in his/her mouth.
I don't understand how people could be having trouble lighting the Tinder-Quik with the striker. Ours just arrived in the mail. I opened it, fluffed up one end of the Tinder-Quik, put it on the counter on some tin foil, flicked the striker a few times to get it going, and the Tinder-Quik lit easily.
The striker is a bit difficult to use with one hand, so I scrunched the tin foil around one end of the Tinder-Quik to hold it in place. Then I held the striker in one hand and used the other hand to flick the wheel. The tinder lit immediately. This works beautifully. I just ordered more.
I like the little flint fire starter thingy. I wish you could get several of them without the tinder. I hike 4,000 footers in the Adirondacks of NY, and I just want a few lightweight pieces of tinder and a lightweight firestarter. I want enough to get through a forced overnight or two. I don't aspire to be a bushcrafter with a "real" flint, etc. The kids and I have "practiced" with this product in the backyard, using birch bark, twigs, etc. and it works. I like those UST wetfire tabs, too, and I've cheated by using both to start a fire.
Great price, nice sparks, tinder burns incredibly well and easily. Not much more to say. This little kit was the cheapest version of a "spark lite" i could find and came with more tinder than the other options. I've always used Vaseline and cotton for tinder, but I must admit I'm a convert to these tinder quiks or tinder tabs. They're waterproof for real. Water sheds off them and when you rip them open the inside is very very flammable. They don't make a mess like Vaseline balls, and are cheaper than I thought. The spark lite that comes with this system is very easy to use, and throws larger sparks than I expected. I used the sparker and a few tabs to add to my altoids fire kit as a fourth ignition source. I highly recommend.
I ordered this product as a light weight fire starter for back packing and the hunting pack. I live in the Pacific North West so a product that will be able to light with ease even when exposed to moisture was a necessity. I really didn't know what to what extent this would work under and to my amazement it lights extremely easy! I greatly enjoy and recommend this product to anyone to use in a bug out bag, backpacking, or hunting adventures.
