i bought this for its detoxifying properties, and to share with my cat and what appears to be rheumatism in his shoulder. I find it to be SO RELAXING. I can't tell if it's helping his shoulder, but my cat curls up in it for naps. It might be my imagination, but he seems to be more energetic.
I purchased this particular FIR heating pad because it not only has jade and tourmaline stones, but amethyst as well. I purchased this size mat for my back pain. Because it did such great job relieving my back pain, I decided to use it on my knees; this entails draping the mat over my knees and lower legs and wrapping it under my legs (which is probably not the purpose of this size mat). By doing this, I found quite a reduction in my knee pain, so much so that I have reduced my anti-inflammatory use by at least 75%. The stones do take 4-5 minutes to heat up, which I would expect, and after turning off the unit, the stones retain the heat for another 5-10 minutes. Its a very gentle heat and is so soothing it's easy to fall asleep while the heat is on. I set the heat at about 42-45 degrees Celsius, which is a comfortable level for me.
I called the supplier to inquire about the button on the upper left of the switch and on this particular model it has no function, nor does it have an adjustable timer (which is of no consequence to me, but it was part of the description). The temperature adjustment is a dial with a digital readout, which is Celsius. The mat is heavy and "bends" along the placement of the stones, as would be expected from a stone mat heating pad.
Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and the level of pain relief I've obtained (as an FYI, FIR heat is an FDA medically approved treatment for pain) and would certainly purchase the GemsMat again.
