Amethyst crystals? Healing crystal energy? Why not hook up some solar panels and sell us some clap-trap about the divine light from the kindly Sun God was transmuted by the amethyst generously dug up from the bosom of the Earth Mother to fix us up for a measly $600 bucks?
If I hadn't experienced a biomat in my doctor's office, I would be clutching my sides and making up sarcastic marketing blurbs still.
What happened? After laying on it for 1/2 hour, my muscle cramps gave up. They just stopped. I have arthritis in my right hand. It's bad enough that I can't close my fist. After 1/2 hour, that went away. And the savage cramping/stiffness from arthritis stayed away for 1-2 weeks.
Whoa.
I thought about it. Meaning I started reading Amazon reviews and clinical trial papers.
These biomats transform heat - yes, the crystals really do pick up the energy and re-radiate in very specific frequencies some of which are particularly good at penetrating tissue and therefore have additional therapeutic benefits that make them better than plain vanilla heat.
What's the major benefit? It packs more of punch. You get the healing benefits of heat without cooking yourself. Quite as much. I noticed as I lay on this mat, my muscles would stop cramping just as I felt the heat. It is very dicey if I could tolerate a sauna long enough to get muscle cramps to stop.
How to use it? You can go for higher temperatures for shorter periods. Or lower temperature for very long periods (sleeping on the mat all night). The mat is pretty hard (No matter how mama earth loves us, it's a bunch of rocks).
First, the temperature dial is in Celsius. There is no way to change this. Body temperature is 37 deg C. The entire temperature range is 30-70 deg C. Start off mellow at 30 C for an hour. You really won't feel much benefit until you hit about 40 deg C. Do not fall asleep on this thing with the temp set above 37 deg until you've acclimated. In about 2-3 short sessions 40 C will feel warm but not sweaty and you'll feel cold when you get off. Now you can go to sleep on this thing. Set an alarm. The controls include an automatic switch set for 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours. It is pretty easy to knock the temperature dial in your sleep. Cover it or tape it down for safety's sake.
I find if I sleep at 40 deg C, all my muscles are loose the next day AND they stay loose. I used to get muscle pain about 2 PM-ish but that has been banished to about 6 PM. However, the arthritis in my hand is still there. I can't make a fist.
So, after sleeping on it all night, I set an alarm and crank the temperature to 70. It takes 30 minutes to reach temperature. By the time it is done, my arthritis is gone for the day. BTW, this biomat earns 4 stars because it's not quite as efficient as the one in my doctor's office.
How can this possibly be? All heat therapy (hyperthermia) triggers the production of heat shock proteins. Other forms of stress (infections/fever, famine) also trigger the production of heat shock proteins (HSP). These proteins are protective. For example, if you are overheated, your proteins will start to unfold (not good) but the HSP's will re-fold the protein saving it. It will also prevent programmed cell death (one of the origins of the live forever by starving yourself theories). Because HSP signal bad times, the HSP triggers the re-programming of your metabolism; early work includes reversing insulin resistance, resetting the natural point for body weight (lower), lowering inflammation.
Isn't this a bit extreme, cooking ourselves to generate HSP's? Maybe not, the HSP proteins are *required* for the mitochondria to function normally. It may be humans must experience some kind of stress routinely in order to function optimally. Personally, I would rather try the heat therapy than the other most convenient method (fasting).
This all sounds great but have I noticed if my weight has dropped mysteriously or my diabetes has reversed? Even in early clinical trials it took about 6-8 weeks to notice results. Also, things improved but changes were closer to 10% improvement, not 50%. So I'm really not expecting to notice anything at all for another 4 weeks.
Do you need a biomat to do heat therapy? Heavens no! Many of the clinical trials used hot baths (researchers are notoriously short of $$$). The minimum therapeutic dose for bathing is 3x per week 30 mins. 6x per week @ 30 minutes is the more common standard. You want your *core* body temperature to hit 37-42 deg C (use a thermometer for the you-know-where). That's the mild range. 43-47 deg C is the high range. There is a real jump in HSP production starting at 43 deg C but you need to spend a lot of time acclimating. I would want someone with me if I started cranking my core temperatures that high.
Or you can try:
Cold therapy. Take a warm bath/shower and in the end turn the water to cool. It should feel refreshing. If you start to shiver, you've gone too far.
Capsaicin, the hot flavor from chili peppers.
Fasting. The original method to trigger HSP production.
The one place, you don't want to use this biomat is with an active cancer. Because it cuts both ways.
If your cancer doesn't have a heat shock response, then it gets cooked and dies. But wait! This kind of therapy ONLY WORKS with radiation/chemotherapy. It seems the heat makes the primary treatment work faster. Heat by itself does nothing.
But if the cancer DOES have a heat shock response then it becomes drug resistant. It doesn't matter if you do the heat therapy before, during or after the chemo. Chemotherapy doesn't work real well anymore. Of course, the HSP response is temporary and resistance will go away but that could be cold comfort and much too late.
Talk to your oncologist.
Update: I ended up turning the biomat on at night and sleeping on top of it. The results have been painless. Literally my muscle aches and pain, and arthritis are pretty much under control about 98% of the time. I used to have muscle cramps in my shoulder which would be so savage that it would turn into pinched nerves in the neck. The biomat is essentially preventing the cramp from ever starting. So as long as I use it, I'm preventing a pinched nerve from happening. For any of you who've ever had one of these , it's worth any kind of money.
Nope. I have not noticed any unexpected weight loss or reversal of diabetes . But my weight and diabetes are both very well-controlled . It may simply be that any changes are unnoticeable to the naked eye.
I love this biomat! I have it in my living room, and I find myself waking up in the am or middle of the night wanting to go use it. It is not very heavy. I have tried the Richway bio mat (I borrowed it) and I actually feel better laying on this one than on the Richway one, and one of my clients said the same thing, they wanted to use this one instead at the next session.
The electrical connection to this mat is very well made. I've not had a problem with it. A quality product: the warmth of the FIR waves is very different from electric blanket or hot water bottle: very relaxing sans any burning sensations. Sleeping on the mat is an addictive experience: waking up refreshed. My friend tried it as well and she told me she was "flying" all day long afterwards. I actually purchased this item, gave it 2 weeks and thought it was a glorified heating mat that was too expensive and sent it back. 2 weeks later I realized my metabolism was up (thyroid levels higher) and less aches and pains from tight tendons, could walk without looking like Herman Munster for the first 10 yards. I use this mat for both my personal and professional use. Personally I have found that it helps relieve stress, I sleep better, and it is great at helping me re-center. I have used other brands as well. While they all have pros and cons the price and value of this mat cannot be beat. I did have to just re-do the temperature configurations to C from F so that I knew how long and at what temperatures I wanted my clients to use the mat on. The mat comes with everything you could need to defuse the heat. I personally like using a towel over the mat so that I get the deep detoxing heat to my body that much faster but I do love the defusing mat for sleeping at night. The company has been great to work with as well. I received an email letting me know what to expect in the package and who to contact with questions. Overall great bang for your buck!!
I've only had this mat for 3 days but I'd like to review while this is fresh in my mind.
I've been in a really awful mood for 3 months; life problems, a surgery etc. etc. A complete grouch.
My 1st day with the mat and honestly I am still in an awful mood but it's seeming different, better :)
I did a 1/2 hr session in the evening, let the mat heat for a long time then slept on it unplugged (it still had residual heat)
