I only write reviews when something is either horrible or great. This was a great! Since I was in a car accident my neck has never been the same. I have tried memory foam, specialty side pillows, sleep pillows to go with our sleep number bed and ALL of them went flat or were too firm and I always woke up with a crick in my neck. Let me start by saying I had no idea what to expect when I got this pillow and I thought it was so weird having these "beans" or whatever in it, thinking what in the world did I get myself into here? lol. Well surprisingly it works wonders. How this pillow differs from others is where you lay your head down the "beans" or whatever is in it rises up to support your neck/head whereas the "fluff" in other pillows disperses. I will say it is odd first laying down on "beans" but once you get used to it (only after one night) you will not wake up with a crick anymore!
For over a month I've struggled with a pinched nerve or tweaked neck muscle which gave me a daily headache. Researching pillows on Amazon I found a suggestion for this one. I read the reviews and said 'this can't be true! relief in a single night?'... I received my pillow last night and slept on it one time (so far)... the BEST sleep of my life, NO neck pain, waking fully refreshed with easy motion including my back which surprised me. In fact, I was so impressed that first thing this morning I bought two more pillows - one for each son. I'm going to spare them decades of lost sleep! I am now firmly a believer! Regarding the comments on the 'crunchy' or 'strange' texture, that gave me no issues whatsoever. The pillow is heavy compared to foam pillows so it doesn't move around the bed. I found the support and stability allowed me to relax faster without out all that tossing and turning to find the best position. I'm guessing that is the reason my back felt rested also. Do yourself a favor... try it.. you'll love it.
This pillow has changed my life. I had been in a few automobile accidents when I was younger and I work on computers all day long. I was having the worst neck aches for many years. Sleeping was horrible especially if I was stressed during the day. I used to sleep with no pillow for many years but then I started getting vertigo, which I swear was happening since I was sleeping flat. My chiropractor suggested I buy this pillow. I did a lot of research before buying it and I can tell you I was very apprehensive due to the reviews from people who had their pillows show up with bugs. All the research I did on this brand I was pretty confident that it would be big free and it was. Definitely pay the money for a good quality pillow. All of the reviews I read had talked about how everyone had no neck pain after the first night that they slept on the pillow, once again I was sceptical but I'm hear to tell you my neck pain went away with my first night sleep. I could not believe that I had actually slept the whole night and woke up with no pain. I swear by this pillow! It's the best for anyone who has neck issues.
This is exactly the same as the original Sobakowa pillow that came out like 25 years ago. I know because I had 2 of the very originals and only just now replaced them. I did not get the extra large. Indeed, it is much smaller than a traditional pillow, just as the original Sobakowa pillow was. However, once you get used to this kind of pillow you simply don't NEED or want anything bigger. You end up just shaping it to support your neck. Yes, it makes crunch noises, all buckwheat pillows do. Once you get used to this pillow, though, it's impossible to go back to anything else. There might be better buckwheat husk pillows made of better lining or different size... but this is perfect enough for me and I'm a total bedding snob.
I've been using sobakawa pillows for a very long time. In recent years it has been difficult to find additions or replacements (my wife has started to use one). This pillow, however, is as good as any I've ever had, which is amazing because I look fairly often just to check on the market. Would be a buyer of this one again...and I'm VERY picky about Sobakawas.

Description
The original sobakawa buckwheat pillow in standard size (19 x 15) with bonus standard protective pillow cover. The sobakawa buckwheat pillow is filled with 100Percent natural buckwheat hulls. Buckwheat pillows have been used extensively throughout the orient for hundreds of years and is still the pillow of choice in Japan. Buckwheat hulls are believed to offer therapeutic benefits far superior to traditional foam and Feather pillow. In terms of oriental medicine, the sobakawa buckwheat pillow offers an important element of human health - having a cool head. The healthiest state of the body is called zu-kan-soku-netsu, meaning cool head and warm feet. Once these elements are out of balance (like warm Head and cool extremities), the body is out of sync and hence suffers from a varieties of ailments including Insomnia, headache, irritability, stiff neck and sluggishness. The 100 percent cotton fabric casing offers maximum air circulation, is very durable and above all is comfortable for sleeping.
I have used a Sobakawa pillow for almost 20 years. I have owned the small Japanese size or travel size one and have owned several. My first one was gifted to me by a friend who said it would take some getting used to but possibly help with my migraines. And she was right. It took about a week to get used to sleeping on it but my migraines that have existed daily since I was 7, went away. This is the first time I have bought the queen size one, and the only complaint I have about it, is that the case in which it comes, is tooooo large and the buckwheat disperses too thinly throughout leaving spaces with no filling. I don't know why they designed it this way, but I fixed this by sewing across one side of it to make it shorter, thus keeping it with just enough buckwheat to work as it always has. I can't imagine what I would do without this pillow as I still have to take my travel one with me on trips to make sure I don't start getting neck pain and headaches. Best pillow ever.
After years of stacking two pillows on top of one another, I never knew of the alternatives. When I was looking for a more minimalist means of sleeping that was more practical and better for my health since I am allergic to dust mites and nneded something that was hypoallergenic... lo and behold I came across Japanese buckwheat husk filled pillows. I decided to take the plunge and get the largest one I could find and all I can say is that I wish I knew about these sooner. No pillow stacking, stays nice & cool, and perfectly molds to the contours of your neck.
One of these plus a Japanese futon mattress over a tatami mat is the most comfortable things I ever slept on hands down.
I got this for my sister. She had a car accident and has problems with her neck and back. This is the only pillow she can sleep on and rest. She loves it and they last a long time. Make sure it's Sobakawa buckwheat. The other ones are not the same.
We have purchased pillows ranging in price from 5 to 75 dollars each, yet I come back to this. Day one and two, expect to have some pain due to adjusting, but by day 3, you will be shocked at how much better you feel from being properly supported and your muscles ACTUALLY resting. Hubby used mine while I was out of town, and I had to get him his own. Our son too. Great for back, side or face. I do recommend getting the suggested pillowcase also. I found it annoying to use a regular pillowcase folded over, or even the one I had made (sewn), but to be fair, I beat up on my pillows pretty well.
I did buy the cloud once, hated it. This original is the way to go. Also doesn't get super hot, a bonus.
I bought buckwheat pillows about 15 yrs. ago thru a Shopping Chanel on TV and fell in love with them! I have been looking for them to offer the pillows again, but no luck. I happened upon them while browsing thru the pillows Amazon offers. I was so happy! This is way bigger than my original ones! I tried it out last night and slept so good. I will never go back to any other pillow. Also, shipping was very quick. Originally, not supposed to have till 8/9 and I received it 8/1!!
