I've been dealing with extreme anxiety my entire life, which leads to an array of medical problems, mostly related to IBS, and migraines. I've been prescribed everything, which is an entirely separate story, but have since removed any and all prescriptions from my life. Over the past few years, I've been trying a number of different products to help with my anxiety. One of the most beneficial products I've tried has been l-theanine. Since I take a number of supplements, herbs, and extracts, the price begins to add up, and it can get quite expensive, so I've begun looking into bulk products that haven't been capsulated, and purchased a capsule maker. The beautiful thing about theanine is it has very little taste (mildly sweet), so I add this stuff right into my morning coffee (I know, I shouldn't be drinking coffee given my anxiety/stomach problems). This works just as well, if not better, than any of the capsuled theanine i've gotten in the past, and comes with significantly more doses (think it has 1000 doses @ 200mg). It takes a *very small* amount of effort to get it to dissolve in my coffee, but it's an extremely minor setback. I use a spoon to smash it up against the glass, and then stir. I'll definitely be continuing w/ this specific l-theanine, and will certainly consider other products from bulk supplements in the future.
I did not receive anything in exchange for this review, and wrote it completely on my own accord (though I'd love to know how people are receiving free things in exchange for reviews!)
I started taking this with Gaba for anxiety. I'm 125 lb so I only took a small dose, some people need much larger. I make a 50 / 50 mix with Gaba or just take it with caffeine for the nootropic effect. For nootropic you can take 500 - 1500 mg with caffeine on an empty stomach. My brain function, memory, and pure will to get a million things done is magnified significantly. Saddly enough I discovered this in my early 40's and went half my life without these amino acid supplements. The only negative is I notice an edge of irritability sometimes when I take this, I've read this is rare, but it can occur.
If you take L-Theanine, this bulk product will save you a LOT of money.
I first learned of L-Theanine after reading Daniel Amen's book, Healing ADD. It's one of the supplements Amen recommends for certain types of ADD / ADHD. We'd gotten the book to learn how to help our nephew, but as we were reading it, my wife suggested that I had one of Amen's seven ADD types. I took his online test, and sure enough, I scored in the area that my wife thought I would. And, one of the supplements for addressing it is L-Theanine.
Keep in mind that for therapeutic doses (such as when treating ADD), one must take more than the "recommended" daily dose. For the type of ADD I was dealing with, Amen often recommends 600 mg/day. I took the pills and WOW, what a difference. I found that 600 mg/day helped, but I'm guessing Amen's recommendation is for a child. As a 215# man, I found I got better results at 900mg/day. With that dosage, I'm MUCH calmer and I feel more focused and in control. However, buying L-Theanine in pill form is expensive. So, I bought a Pill Machine and some capsules and started making my own. MUCH CHEAPER.
A couple of tips: For absorbtion, L-Theanine needs to be taken on an empty stomach. After much reading on this, I've learned that it fights with other amino acids for crossing the blood-brain barrier. If you just take L-Theanine by itself, it doesn't have to fight and it gets absorbed much better.
ALSO -- if you also take L-Tyrosine, the two should be taken separately, both on an empty stomach. Reason: They are both amino acids, and they will fight for which one gets to cross the blood-brain barrier. Taking them at the same time greatly reduces their effectiveness. After taking both Theanine and Tyrosine for over two years, I can attest to this.
I also learned that L-Theanine has a slightly more sedative effect than L-Tyrosine, so I take my L-Theanine at night before bed, and my L-Tyrosine first thing in the morning when I get up -- OR, if I happen to get up in the middle of the night (I keep the L-Tyrosine on the counter in my master bathroom).
Bonus: By taking both L-Tyrosine and L-Theanine, I was able to cut my blood pressure medications in half, and I have lower blood pressure than I had prior to taking these amino acids. Amazing.
Bottom line, though: Whatever the reason you're taking L-Theanine, this bulk powder will save you a LOT of money.
I am a former drug addict. Other than alcohol, and weed my drug of choice was xanax. A LOT of xanax. I honestly don't even know how I am alive. Even after 9 years of sobriety my system is still messed up from the heavy xanax abuse. Stress, anxiety, and being on edge and irritable. I have tried many things, some which work pretty good but I was still left with the on edge feeling causing irritability. I decided I would try L-Theanine and I am so glad that I did. About 15 minutes after consuming it I am calm and relaxed. This product has been a game changer for me.
I bought this for my husky, Raven, who has severe anxiety about thunderstorms, fireworks, and strangers. It is AMAZING!!! Instead of frantically trying to crawl under the bed during storms, he just finds me and calmly lays down next to me. He lets new people pet him now, which he never did before. I was so impressed with the results that I began using it myself, for MY anxiety, and I was able to cut my Rx medication in half with it! I eat the powder straight-it doesn't taste bad. I mix my dogs in his food. The powder is a lot cheaper than the supplements made for dogs that are flavored. We have been using L-Theanine for over 11 months now. This is an excellent solution to a major problem!!

Description
L-Theanine is an amino acid that is naturally found in green tea. Green tea is widely reported as being very healthful and is found in the form of an extract in everything from power bars to ice cream these days. This is because green tea is a source of polyphenols which have antioxidant properties, keeping healthy cells from being damaged by harmful outside sources like free radicals. Since green tea in America generally has less than 10mg theanine in it, very few people actually see its effects in action. This supplement is a better source.
Despite many positive reviews of this product (across various brands, and on other internet sources and forums as well) I was still surprised at how well this worked. I have always been overly sensitive to the effects of caffeine, such that instead of increasing my focus, a cup of coffee will cause racing thoughts and anxious jitters instead. However, I often get inadequate sleep, so it's difficult to avoid caffeine altogether if I want to be awake at work. I started taking 200mg of this every morning and found the caffeine induced anxiety was significantly reduced. Without caffeine, it also seems to have some calming effects, albeit very mild (nothing like an anxiolytic such as xanax, but also way fewer negative side effects).
Quality supplement with convenient resealable package.
Like most good L-Theanine, these help stabilize any nootropic stack with stimulants like caffeine or noopept. L-Theanine has several beneficial effects according to the Internet, but in my own experience, it helps (sometimes noticeably) to keep me relaxed and focused on stressful days. The effect is very subtle, but it makes a huge difference when hopped up on other, more... exciting nootropics.
One interesting effect of L-Theanine (no matter which brand I've taken) is vivid dreams within a day of consumption. I take L-Theanine in the morning before work to manage stress, and then again around lunch time because I get a more pronounced effect on sleep and dreaming after about 12-18 hours.
It definitely serves a vital role in my stack, but your mileage may vary. Absolutely worth trying, if you haven't before.
I workout often after work, and am trying to gain strength, so I started looking in to pre-workout supplements to give me energy after a long day. The downside with most store bought supplements is that they come with so many fillers, and they ALL have SO MUCH caffeine (which I cannot take after like noon if I want to sleep well). By buying each component separately from bulk supplements, I can design my own pre-workout mix without the caffeine and without any additives. After extensive research (and no, I am not a professional, so I'm not advocating the below unless it worked for you, do your own research!) here is the list of ingredients I use:
>Beet Root Powder: Energy, boost endurance and increase strength, replaced caffeine for me -- it definitely has a strong beet taste, but I kind of like that it offsets the lack of taste of the other ingredients. Sometimes I throw in coconut sugar for sweetness to offset the strength of the beet.
>Beta Alanine: Research shows it helps fight muscle fatigue and increases muscle endurance in high-intensity exercise.
>Creatine Monohydrate: Most sports scientists consider creatine to be the number one supplement for increasing strength and power.
>L-Citrulline: Citrulline increases blood flow to body tissues. Research shows that for exercise, this may help supply your muscles with the oxygen and nutrients they need and stimulates muscle endurance & reduces muscle soreness
>BCAAs: To aid in recovery. Often taken after workouts, but does have similar benefits when take in pre-workouts.
>Theanine: Boost alertness and reaction time, it also has a calming effect, so great for afternoon/night workouts. Also found to go great when combined with the caffeine in pre-workouts.
I use L-Theanine for a different purpose than most - I suffer from Essential Tremor (an idiopathic tremor which affects my hands primarily). I've suffered with this condition for years, but in the last few years it has become more bothersome (I am now 57). I have tried several different alternative remedies to manage this condition, but found that L-Theanine works best with little to no side-effects that I have noticed. When I started taking L-Theanine I used products that contained Suntheanine - a trademarked product with the most research on it. Recently I decided to try something more cost-effective. I did a little quick research on the web to find a product that was available in bulk form but that had been tested to be almost 100% L-Theanine (like other amino acids - the D-form is not bioactive). I've now been using this BulkSupplements product and it seems to work as well as the more costly version, so I am very happy with it, and plan to try some of their other products.
I have enjoyed BulkSupplements in general. This product l-theanine was purchased to help me with my anxiety after going through a stressful life event. I add it into my coffee and it seems to help me feel more joyful and in control of my emotions. I can tell because I feel the difference :-) It needs to be stirred in while the coffee is hot. It takes a bit of whisking but it dissolves fairly quickly. I add a flavored creamer to my coffee and can not say it tastes bad. Go ahead and elevate your mood!
