I purchased this refill kit for the two-pack DampRid containers, also purchased here on Amazon. I was originally anticipating needing to change out the material every couple months or so, but I'm thrilled to report that I haven't even had to change it once after 6 months. So, while I haven't technically had to use the bag I purchased as of yet, the original material outperformed my expectations by a long shot.
I use the stuff to maintain the moisture levels in a freezer based fermentation chamber. Prior to it's introduction, I was constantly battling moisture buildup, mold problems and other issues that were directly related to high humidity. Afterwards, zero problems. Better yet, I've gotten at least six month's use from the original container, so even on a maintenance schedule and near daily use, one of these bags will easily last me well over a year or more.
For the general cost of this stuff, it hardly even makes sense to try and research a DIY alternative...probably wouldn't save you much at all. I like that...it's not an overpriced chemical that can be bought in bulk for pennies on the dollar, just because you don't know what it is. (It's calcium chloride, by the way.) Sure, it costs a bit more than the bulk stuff...but you get a free, identifiable bag and can be relatively sure it hasn't been exposed to the air.
It's good stuff. Their little containers are a pretty good value too. If you're looking for a way to keep moisture in check, this (or the bulk alternative) will work out just fine for you. 5 stars!
This stuff works like a charm - extremely fast too. I live in an RV and in the winter the inside of the windows get condensation and drip inside the sills. It's always wet and if you touch the window drops run all the way down - the inside of the windows is really wet. I used some of this in my bedroom and I swear within an hour or so my window was completely dry and hasn't been wet since. I use this version in the container in my bathroom and their hanger version for my bedroom. If you have problems with dampness I would highly recommend these and they are very reasonably priced.
Why do I love this?
First, it help rid my dark shoe closet of bad smells and dampness.
Second, purchasing this on Amazon saves me nearly $2 from my local CVS store (even when it is on sale at CVS).
I have several DampRid containers, so purchasing this refill is economical and can fill 3-4 of the containers in one shot.
I find the product effective and use it year round.
These work great, they do extract lots of liquid from air. But be careful when you take the boat out, if they are not secure and the liquid is in bottom and spills over things (like clothes in my case) you may end up some. Because its like jell like liquid and some clothes washed out OK, some material got messed up. So just make sure the empty it often or secure it when you are about on your boat.
I like this product because it really does draw moisture out of the air. I have used it for several years and I'm always amazed to see how much moisture in several of our rooms. Very satisfied with this product.

Living in the bay area, you get a lot of moisture in the air which = mold and mildew problems. I get the hanging kind to use in my closet just to try out. Sure enough, no more mildew on my clothes. I was shocked, thinking, oh it's a gimmick. So I got a set of these with the tubs and some refiller packs. I can't believe I have it sitting in my room, after a month the cup was filled with water. I am sure it's not getting everything, but every little bit helps if it's giving mold less moisture to grow with.
I was skeptical that this would rid my basement of the musty odor that you notice the minute you begin to walk down the stairs, but wow! I have purchased DampRid now in the larger bucket and in the small 32oz. refillable pails and I could be an ambassador. I have read the clean scented version bothers some people so I also got the unscented, but the scented is OK. I only wish they had a decorative container.
Product lives up to its advertising, it rids dampness anywhere it is placed. I have a recently finished basement and I use these in the closets to prevent mold and mildew. They work so well I can't imagine how damp and musty everything would be without them. I will always have refills on hand and I would highly recommend anyone giving these a try.
We bought an older house which is not as "tight" as some of the newer ones and - in the Phoenix area - we get some dandy rainstorms in the summer. So under the counters in the kitchen it sometimes gets a tad damp smelling. This product removes that without work or bother. Just put the granules in, drain the liquid. Use the original container and buy this filler. I'm happy. Will be happier when we "tighten the envelope" on this older house; but until then, this works well.
I've been using DampRid for years. We live by the ocean and deal with a marine layer throughout the year. DampRid an inorganic mineral salt called calcium chloride that naturally absorbs moisture from the air. I tuck a few tubs around the house and I empty the water that collects in the bottom of the tub and refill with more crystals 3-4 times a year. It keeps the mold at bay and things don't get that musty smell. I definitely recommend it.
