I was amazed that this wrap works exactly as it says! Of course, everything should, but so many things now days don't even come close to the product description. It comes with FOUR Sets of instructions. They want to make sure you use it correctly, which is a pretty good idea since a lot of people never bother to read the brochure that comes with the product.
It was only a small challenge to get the plastic wrapped clay pack inside the rather thin cover, but it will stay there until such time as the cover might need to be washed.
I was amazed that after only 1 1/2 minutes in my 1000 watt microwave this pad felt nice and warm. Not hot - the booklet says it will be like an electric heating pad on low. And, yes, it did continue to heat for about 3 minutes after I removed it. I bought this for my feet which feel like they have been encased in solid ice in this very cold weather. I didn't know if it would warm both feet, but it is just large enough to do that for my women's size 8 1/2 feet. I put it in the bed to pre-warm the mattress and sheet/blanket while I do the final things before going to bed.
The first night I used this I was able to get to sleep in about 5 minutes, compared to the hour and a half minimum time it had been taking for my feet to warm enough (with fuzzy bed socks on and also wrapped in heavy fleece!) to get to sleep. I didn't even need the fuzzy bed socks with this pad! It does stay quite warm for a couple hours, and I wound up waking up for my usual night time potty trip with my feet so warm that I did not need the pad at all the rest of the night.
When I first opened the box I was concerned that the weight might be too heavy for my feet. It carries heavy, but on my feet it feels just right! I highly recommend this "heating pad". I think it would be a wonderful help for many other parts of the body also because, with its velcro straps it is very versatile.
I have an elbow injury and this is perfect for the daily icing I need to do. Because of the straps, it wraps snugly around my arm and stays in place. I can also put it on by myself by pre-fastening the straps, sliding it on my arm, and then tightening the straps down from there. The soft cover protects your skin from ice burns (which I have gotten from other products and takes days to heal). It's also great for putting behind you to ice your back as you sit in a chair. The clay product holds cold for ~20 minutes. However, there are 2 downsides in my opinion: (1) It takes ~12 hours to get super cold again, so if you ice multiple times each day, you should buy more than one; and (2) The straps could be a bit longer to accommodate larger folks who might want to wrap it around their mid-section. Other than that, this is a solid product.
The inside contains two clay pieces rather than one solid one. That allows you to fold the wrap in half making it easy to put it around where you need it. And the clay retains heat for an amazingly long length of time.
The instructions remind you that heating occurs for another minute or two after you take it out of the microwave. That is certainly true. Don't make the mistake of thinking it didn't get hot enough and heat it some more. That must be why some of the negative reviews say theirs burst.
Our entire family has used these clay-based Thermipaq wraps for many years, and we all swear by them. Compared to the gel-based products we'd used previously, these retain much of their heat (when warmed in the microwave oven) or cold (when placed in the freezer) for a considerably longer time, releasing that heat or cold gradually.
They've also been far more durable than their gel-based counterparts: a big plus. They do eventually need replacement, but at least subjectively, most of ours have lasted at least 3-5 years, even with fairly frequent use.
When you need to soothe an aching back or sore muscles, or even have a stomach ache (and need the equivalent of a hot water bag, stat, available after just over a minute's heating up in the microwave), these are an indispensable part of one's home medicine cabinet. We've regularly kept around enough of these pads so there's always one at ready for each family member.
This medium size is just barely large enough to wrap around one's small- to medium-sized torso with the attached strap, to place heat or cold on, say, one's lower back, although larger people might well need a larger pad for this task. They're definitely the right size for arms, legs, and tummies.
I've been using this product (and size) for at least 8 years, previously bought several at 2-3 x the cost at retail pharmacy. Even after months of daily use I've never had issues with the plastic leaking. I hand-wash the covers. They've always held up so well that I have some new covers stored. The packs with clay beads don't hold heat as well IMO.
Yes, over the years I have turned a few into bags of rocks. Totally my fault, due to heating when in pain and half-asleep (extra zeros on the microwave), or using an unfamiliar microwave. I keep one in our RV. When traveling for 1 night with no checked bag, I take one (in the box). Be aware that TSA WILL hassle you, research their data, and call the powers that be. They always let me take it on board. I always call TSA about medical items before I fly; they tell me that clay is allowed (plus the plastic clearly says clay), but I have problems at security anyway. I've never frozen it.

Description
The ThermiPaq Medium Sized Hot & Cold Pain Relief Wrap is a leader in cold packs for injuries and hot packs for pain. The hot pad cold pad uses a thermal ceramic compound made from all-natural, clay-based materials. Developed by a former NASA engineer, this revolutionary compound utilizes radiant energy to create a deep penetrating, therapeutic system for hot and cold applications. The pack is reusable and offers radiant energy that offers distinct advantages transferring heat and cold slowly and evenly to your affected pain area. This allows heat therapy to penetrate deeper and more effectively. The Medium Sized Therapeutic Hot & Cold Pain Relief Wrap conforms to all parts of the body including the back, knee, thighs and shoulders. The clay based properties of Thermipaq enable you to easily mold the ThermiPaq heat pad to any affected area for better pain relief. ThermiPaq is safe and easy to use. Our radiant energy technology allows ThermiPaq to heat evenly throughout without generating "hot spots" that can harm your skin. For hot therapy, the pad quickly heats in the microwave (see instructions for microwaveable hot times). For cold therapy, place the pad in the freezer and it is ready for use in one hour.
This is actually my second ThermiPaq and I love this thing. Sometimes I have to ice my back or hip and all I have to do is pull this thing out of the freezer and strap it on. I can then continue doing whatever I need to do. It just stays strapped to me. It stays cold for a fairly long amount of time and it is sufficiently cold, but not so cold you can't stand it.
My favorite cold packs! I have severe back pain and sciatica. I use these on a daily rotating basis, that's why I have 2 so there's always one in the freezer ready to go! The only thing I don't like about tgese is that the plastic doesn't stand up to wear and tear or being kept frozen. I learned that after ny first one split at tge corners and leaked. I tried patching it with duct tape but it didn't last long. Now I reinforce my new pack before I even put them in the freezer for the first time. I use duct tape all along the edges and reinforce the corners and the middle as well. Since I use them so much, tgey beed the extra reinforcement. I get about a year to 18 months out of them and that's with daily use. I haven't found anything better tgat stays cold as long! With my back and sciatica issues, it's easier for me to be able to lie down on the pack, trying to balance the pack on the right spots is useless! Definitely need to use the included cover to protect your skin plus whatever I'm wearing for clothes 😉
My mistake purchased looking for something comparable to my elastogel ice pack. I didn't read into this and realized that it was a clay type interior inside a plastic case, that slides into a soft exterior cover.
Was going to return it but it was a $6 charge on like $19 item so I'll just keep it.
My concern with this product is that I usually lay on my ice or heat, but this explicitly states not to do so, since it can burst the plastic.
Bummer, I just don't want to be that gentle with my products I suppose, but nothing is wrong with this product. Haven't yet used so I can't speak to how long it stays cold etc.
I have to admit that we haven't had the need to try this as a heating pad, but it works great as an ice pack. We have one in this size and the next size down & love them. They stay cold a long time yet they aren't too cold and I love that they come with the covers with the velcro straps. I will say that one of the velcro closures came unsewn which I sewed back together myself, but that was easier than returning it. Still, these things are great and I highly recommend.
My back LOVES heat from this wrap. I slipped on black ice and strained all kinds of things around my ribs while on a trip. Borrowed a gel pack, which worked somewhat. When I got home, I found a smaller version of this in a local drugstore and noticed a big difference in how the heat felt. So I was thrilled for find this large pack on Amazon. It's even better than the smaller one --- covers the whole side of my body with penetrating "moist" heat. I can just feel the muscles relax and my back smiling :-) (I know, it's covered in plastic so this doesn't make physical sense, but that is how it feels to me.)
