Just got 8 of them (2 - four packs) and lined the bottom of my new chest freezer. My hope is that they will buy me more time if I have a power outage. Blue Ice freezes at 31.5F, just below water, which is good because it will melt (and absorb a LOT of heat from the phase change) while the rest of the freezer contents stay frozen. Also supposed to make the freezer last longer if it has more stuff in it, the temp is more stable and the compressor does not have to kick on as often.
They seem tough and the fact that they do not expand when frozen like water should make it unlikely to burst when frozen. We will see how they work.
UPDATE: I have the bulge issue others reported on about half of them. Like a tumor growing out one side. No issues with this so far, perhaps shaking them vigorously before freezing them will mix any water evenly? Just a guess. Not thawing them all out to try this, but something you might consider if you buy some.
This product does a good job of keep frozen/cold things as I wanted. I recently spent 6 days in the Wilderness. The Rubbermaid Blue Ice packs kept our food frozen until the last morning. The only problem I have with this product is that one of the ice packs has bulged and is no longer flat. This product does need to be frozen to O degrees (as stated) to do it's optimum job of keeping things cold or frozen. A good quality ice chest is a must as well to keep food frozen for 5 days. I do recommed this product and I will buy more.
I used these with my Lifetime Cooler on my trip to Yellowstone NP and they worked great keeping everything cold and helped make my ice last longer. I put them at the bottom of the cooler to help elevate the food above the melting ice. Good Ice packs
These are really good quality, a nice size, and a great price. The only slight negative is that they don't freeze uniformly flat on the side (theres a slight buldge) but its not a big deal.
I have had these for 2 years and now updating original review to confirm that I remain happy and positive. They keeps things cool in my cool box and can recommend fully.
