Grabber - The Original Space Brand Sportsman's Hooded Blanket/Poncho - Olive

THIS IS MY REVIEW OF THE:
GRABBER OUTDOORS ORIGINAL SPACE BLANKET WITH A HOOD:
This past winter was mildly cold. My tiny apartment seem colder than being outside! i discovered that adding TWO of these GRABBER OUTDOORS
Original Space Blankets to my bedding added the warmth that I needed.
Think of this this way; Your Body needs BASE LAYER CLOTHING to keep you warm OUTSIDE IN THE COLD ELEMENTAL WEATHER : the same BASE LAYERS can be said for BEDDING INDOORS.
START BY:
STRIP THE BED.
Place one GRABBER OUTDOORS ORIGINAL SPACE BLANKET ON TOP OF YOUR BARE MATTRESS. THE GRABBER BLANKET WILL ACT AS A COLD BARRIER AND BODY HEAT REFLECTOR. THE FIRST GRABBER BLANKET WILL REFLECT YOUR BODY HEAT BACK UP TO YOUR BODY!!
REMEMBER TO PLACE THE GRABBER BLANKET ON THE MATTRESS - SHINEY FOIL SIDE FACING UPWARDS TOWARDS THE CEILING.
PUT ON THE MATTRESS COVER ON TOP OF THE FIRST GRABBER BLANKET. ADD ONE WOOL BLANKET ON TOP OF THE FIRST GRABBER BLANKET. SLEEP ON TOP OF THE FIRST WOOL BLANKET LAYER AND IN-BETWEEN THE NEXT TWO WOOL BLANKET LAYERS!!
NOTE:
CAUTION: PLEASE!! DO NOT SLEEP ON TOP OF THE BARE GRABBER SPACE BLANKET NOR PLACE THE BLANKET AGAINST YOUR BARE SKIN-- ---YOU WILL SWEAT AND CATCH A REALLY BAD COLD/OR A NASTY FLU FROM THE DROPPING TEMPERATURE AND EVENING COLD DRAFTY AIR!!

ADD TWO WOOL BLANKETS. SLEEP BETWEEN THE FIRST WOOL BLANKET LAYER.
PLACE THE 2ND GRABBER SPACE BLANKET ONTOP OF THE TWO WOOL BLANKETS.
NOTE:
!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!: PLACE THE 2nd GRABBER BLANKET-SHINEY SIDE FACING DOWN TOWARDS THE FLOOR,
THIS 2ND GRABBER BLANKET WILL REFLECT YOUR BODY HEAT BACK DOWN TO YOUR BODY!!
ADD YOUR DOWN COMFORTER ON TOP OF YOUR 2ND GRABBER BLANKET!
PEEL BACK BEDDING DOWN TO THE FIRST WOOL BLANKET.
NOISE NOTE:
ALTHOUGH THE GRABBER IS SLIGHTLY STIFF-- WITH NORMAL USE; ONCE YOU PAST THE "BREAK IN PERIOD" ( LIKE A NEW SHOES); THERE IS LESS ANNOYING CRACKING NOISE!

PJ TIME AND MEXICAN ABULETA HOT CHOCOLATE WITH A ORANGE PEEL TWIST!!
CLIMB ABOARD!!
RESULTS: A LITTLE BIT CRACKING NOISE--BUT--
CLOSE YOUR EYES AND YOU WILL FEEL VERY TOASTY WARM-
EVEN AS THE NOISEY RADIATOR HEAT SHUTS DOWN!!

Use for CAMPING or as a Rain /cold weather Hoodie::
As we all may be aware for CAMPING USE: THE GRABBER SPACE BLANKET I FEEL NEEDS Additional Grommets and TIE - DOWN RETAINING LOOPS are needed FOR SHELTER BUILDING. or to properly use it as a rain Hoodie or cold
foul weather barrier. Adding more GROMMETS AND TIE- DOWN LOOPS improvements will of course, add to the cost. but so will the added cost of fumbling around with carabiners and tent clamps!

SUGGEST FURTHER USES AND PURCHASE:
ADD ONE TO YOUR HOME/CAR EMERGENCY KIT.
ENCOUNTER A COLD BREEZY MOVIE THEATRE--NO PROBLEM!!
BUS DRIVER FROM ALASKA??
TURN TRANSIT BLIZZARD TURNS INTO TOASTY COMMUTE!
THE GRABBER OUTDOORS ORIGINAL SPACE BLANKET WORKS GREAT
WITH A POLARTECH BASE LAYER AND A WOOL SWEATER!!

BUY AGAIN??--
DEFINITELY- PURCHASED 3 SO FAR---NEED ONE MORE GRABBER HOODIE!!

I recently used this blanket on an overnight backpacking trip with my girlfriend. Originally I had bought it as something to have in the car as a "just in case" measure against the upcoming winter months, however, I saw that it was laying nearby while I was loading my pack and I added it on a whim. I figured it was light and small enough to go unnoticed in my pack and it might come in handy. After hiking five miles, setting up camp, and cooking we settled in for the night in a small tent (Eureka! Apex 2XT - Tent (sleeps 2)). The weather was expected to be mild (early fall in southwest PA) so, to save weight and bulk; we packed in two therm-a-rest sleeping pads and a USGI wool blanket to share. I woke up at 12AM to her shivering after the night had turned damp and temperatures dropped to the low 50's (Fahrenheit). Initially I tried to add my warmth to her, but was unable to keep her comfortable. Then I remembered the space blanket in my pack. I got it out, unfolded it, put the shiny side down and covered the both of us with it. Almost immediately I noticed the warmth increase and she stopped shivering. Within 5 minutes we were much warmer and more comfortable. It definitely made a difference in the amount of heat we retained. On a negative note, I did notice in the morning that moisture collected underneath the space blanket, but with the wool blanket it didn't have any effect on my warmth or comfort. Also, this product is, for all intents and purposes, a tarp consisting of two layers of plastic with aluminum between. It is pretty noisy (think wadding up wrapping paper on Christmas) and it is not soft and fluffy, but it works. It is made to retain heat and to keep the wind and rain off of you, and in that regard it excels. The quality of materials and construction is pretty good too. The borders are single stitched, but it isn't shoddy. I would say that overall it is well made and reasonably durable, especially considering the low price . I am definitely happy with mine and it will be a constant addition to my pack. As simple as it is, it has a lot of uses and I am sure it will come in handy again. My advice is get one, try it out, and put it in your car or emergency kit (if you are smart enough to have one). You won't even know it is there until you need it.

Ordered this to replace one that accidentally got blown into a campfire by the wind. I may cut the burned one into smaller squares, bind the edges and use them as seat warmers at sporting events.
With that said, this tarp has so many uses--shelter, ground cloth, safety, survival. Use it with the silver side facing inward to preserve body heat, or with the silver side facing outward to reflect heat away from you.
It's lightweight and folds down small-scale so there's no reason to not keep one in your car, daypack or camping gear box.
Just keep it away from open flames or heat sources!

Before I purchased these hooded blankets, I got 2 of the regular Grabber Space Blankets. My husband and I liked them so much and could see the value of having the hooded blankets that I purchased these as well. The hood is large and doesn't fit well, but it could keep you dry by not having rain or melting snow running down your back. If you wear a knit hat and then tie a scarf around your neck over the blanket, it would keep the hood/blanket on. You would be a virtual super hero!

The material is not flimsy, but sturdy-as thick as a regular tarp, but with the space blanket material on one side. If you put it over yourself, you immediately feel the retained body heat. There are little corner "pockets" on 2 corners to help you hold the blanket on while wearing the hood. You could stand facing a campfire or heat source (obviously not so close as to start yourself on fire) and catch the heat by holding the front open. I got these to put in the car emergency kits. I often have a 2 year old grandchild with me, so I thought it would be good to wrap ourselves in if we ever broke down in the cold, northern winters. You could just use it as a tarp as well. I don't think you would be disappointed.

There is literally no substitution for the quality and construction of an original space blanket. I have carried these in the wilderness for over 40 years... and find no substitute that is as durable and that I would stake my survival on. The extra ounces are beyond whatever else you trade off

This is a high quality reusable "space blanket." As the other reviewer said, don't confuse this with the pocket-size mylar sheets, which are great for emergencies but not useful for much else. This blanket could be used regularly for sporting events, camping, hiking etc. if you wanted to. Not as nice as a wool comforter, but a lot lighter and cheaper. Mine are car blankets for emergencies or unplanned picnics, rest stops, etc.

An added bonus is that this blanket is made in the USA, and appears to be made in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

These work pretty well, especially in wet or windy weather. The hood and hand pockets make it pretty easy to cover your head and wrap and hold it around yourself without having to tie it together like I've tried to do with the regular space blankets without the hood and hand holds. They are 100% water proof, so you could use this in place of a rain poncho pretty easily, e.g. if you're a spectator somewhere.
As thin as they are and as small as they pack down, it's pretty amazing what reflecting your own heat back and keeping the wind off can do. In some situations you need to be aware of moisture management so you don't get damp inside these, and they work best in my opinion over another layer that holds warm air in a gap between the space blanket and your skin, like a fleece. They still have grommets in case you need to use it like a regular tarp.

It is rare for me to call a product perfect. Well, this one is. Good OD green color to give you a tactical advantage in a wooded environment. Seems very durable, very tarp like. Nice corner hand grasps. Decent hood, though the noise from movement would prevent me from hearing well, yet this is an EMERGENCY blanket so that should not play to much into the equation. It does what it needs to. I would trust this in freezing weather for sure. I have lived in Korea, Alaska, Michigan so I KNOW cold!!!...This combined with basic clothing and shelter should keep you alive in 95% of situations. To be honest, I would probably trust this if I was naked in freezing weather. I would definitely recommend this to ANYONE. Survivalist, camper, soldier, prepper, adventurist. (*Ten Year Army Vet)

This is the only Space Blanket that I will buy and here are the reasons why. It has two hand holds that you can grab onto so you can wrap the blanket around you with out exposing your hands to the elements. This version also has a hood incorporated into it. Remember, we lose about 70% of our body heat through our head and neck region. This is a very well thought out design.

Definitely reusable and the hood is a real plus. Even though I live in Florida, there are times when this is a necessity. I have been caught in heavy rain a few times and been thoroughly chilled at 75 degrees F. Rain is very cold even in a warm climate. It is 6' by 6' and could be a ground cover under bedding in a pinch. Bonus is that it is made in Michigan.
